CLOTHING/ DRY GOODS

by Zette Emmons

1. Ecomall

Eighth-grade science fair graphics but a useful place to find an exhaustive list of enviro-products and services, from investments to household goods to all-natural clothing to travel.

2. Tsui Design and Research (tip: choose the no-frames version)

A mysterious and beautiful website incorporating architecture, clothing, virtual environments, industrial design and more. The company strives to unify "organic, art nouveau and ecological design as well as embrace advances in technology." (!!) It's worth investigating just to try to figure out who they are and what they are trying to create.

3. Hello Again! A New Wave of Recycled Art and Design

Entertaining and informative home page for an exhibition which runs until July 1997, illustrating a sampling of more than 900 objects made of recycled materials, including furniture, clothing, art and folk art. Connects to the Oakland Museum of California (a jewel of a museum) and the museum store, where one can order wonderful stuff from recycled materials .

4. The Vintage Archives

Complete directory to sources for vintage (read used, but in good shape) clothing and jewelry. Beautifully designed.

5. The Resourceful Home

Tasteful, low-key and expensive--"scads of cools things, all environmentally friendly." Site for one store, but worth a look as an upgrade from Ecomall.

Also see as an example of a struggling, but ambitious young fashion designer, Geoffrey B. Small fashion recycling. All kinds of non-mainstream garments made from vintage and just plain old used clothing which are "both socially and environmentally conscious."
