FOOTBALL

by D.J. LaChapelle

There's simply nothing better than a crisp, clear autumn day, a flask (or can) of your favorite beverage, and the supreme satisfaction of watching your fave football team pummel the daylights out of the enemy. Well...sure...there are better things, but not many. If we had our druthers, football would not begin until Labor Day, a strict George Halas-like dress code would be enforced upon coaches, and the color teal could be never be.

1. Packer Plus Online

I'm a Packer fan, have been forever, and make no apologies. I still can't believe my parents gave up our Lambeau Field season tix when we moved to South Dakota. Of course, that was in the 70's, the Dark Ages for Pack fans. Maintained by the Milwaukee Sentinel, this is probably the best NFL team site in terms of comprehensive coverage. A great starting point for you new Packer faithful.

2. The Pro Football Hall of Fame

Mecca for NFL fans. Great history, though not quite as much as I'd like. Of course I am a person who enjoyed reading "Starr" (the Bart Starr autobiography), and "I Never Played the Game" (by Howard Cosell). Of particular interest is the "Decade by Decade" section. What this site really needs is a full-blown multi-media extravaganza on the evoultion of the football uniform.

3. How 'bout them Cryboys?

"A compilation of every single loss in the history of the Dallas Cryboys." What more can one say? Heaven.

4. Computers Watching Football

These guys at MIT are developing some sort of bizarre computer program that can predict what plays will be run given the formation of the team in the instant before the ball is hiked. Are our tax dollars funding this? What a fabulous idea! If you have some time, you can pitch in and help -- they need people who know football formations just by looking at them. To get you fired up they have thoughtfully provided NBC's pre-game show theme music.

5. The Louisiana Superdome

You name it, it's here. From artificial turf to climate control to economic impact to celebrity suites -- absolutely everything you could possibly want to know about the biggest indoor stadium in America. A palace to football with no team to fill it (sorry, Saints fans; maybe Heath Schuler is the answer).

Also... Monday Night Football--for those maniacs who actually can't get enough of Dan Dierdorf... The South End Zone--a more complete history of the Green Bay Packers you will never find... The College Football Hall of Fame--loads of stats and history... Notre Dame Stadium Cam--every 5 minutes a new shot... NFL.COM--a giant commercial for the NFL...and Football Exposed- a "woman to woman guide to understanding the game of football." This looks like quite the video.
