WHAT IS THE LIBERTY TREE ALLIANCE?

The Liberty Tree Alliance is a national association of writers, scientists, and activists concerned with the preservation of the natural world. It was founded in 1995. We produce reports and other educational materials on the scientific and social dimensions of ecological sustainability. But our main work, and current preoccupation, is this Website.

Only two persons are employed full time by Liberty Tree. The bulk of research and writing is produced by more than seventy contributors around the country, working ad-hoc and part-time. Some are affiliated with national and regional environmental groups, others are independent operators; all are attracted by the promise of a low-overhead approach to reaching new audiences through a novel and elastic medium.

We occupy a broad band of the political spectrum, and welcome disagreement and variety. What unites us is a common question: How can people arrange matters so that they meet the demands of the present without diminishing the natural inheritance of the future?

Liberty Tree is run by three partners in consultation with a dozen associates. The partners are Peter Bergman and Frank Smith in Los Angeles and Conn Nugent in New York. Bergman is a writer and producer who founded and co-directed the Firesign Theater comedy troupe and now serves as the president of Radio Free Oz. Smith is the chairman of Future Strategies, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in the intersections of public opinion, electoral politics, and environmental policy. Nugent ran the environment program at the Nathan Cummings Foundation and was executive director of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War when that organization won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. He and Jessica Robinson, late of Worth OnLine and the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity, edit the Website and write the non-bylined text.

Technical work and good counsel are provided by High Frontier Productions of Alexandria, Virginia. The three principals are DJ LaChapelle, Thomas Fletcher, and Jim Jonas. Illustrations are by John Leamy, America's greatest living artist of Irish extraction.

This Website is wholly financed by foundation grants to our fiscal parent, Public Interest Projects, Inc., a not-for-profit New York corporation. Contributions to Public Interest Projects are tax deductible. Start-up support for the Liberty Tree Alliance was provided by the Nathan Cummings Foundation. The Website project is made possible by grants from the W. Alton Jones Foundation, the Winslow Foundation, the Weeden Foundation, and the Turner Foundation.

Real Audio software has been provided through the generosity of Progressive Networks.
