7. On the Other Hand...

Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology, from Ultimate Goal of The Research Program: Assessing Risks to People:

"During the past two decades, it has become clear that predicting risks to humans from chemical substances is not a simple matter of linear extrapolation from tests for carcinogenicity and other effects in animals. There are too many variables. There are both similarities and differences in response among species and sexes; it is not always clear how animal or cellular models relate to people; and little research has been done on the effects of low exposures over long periods of time, such as those encountered in the workplace or environment."

Dr. Louis J. Guillette Jr., Professor Scientific Director, Biotechnologies for the Ecological, Evolutionary and Conservation Program, University of Florida, from "Hormone Copycats":

"Imagine if, for the last 50 years, we had sprayed the whole earth with a nerve gas. Would you be upset? Would I be upset? Yes, I think people would be screaming in the streets. Well, we've done that. We've released endocrine disrupters throughout the world that are having fundamental effects on the immune system and on the reproductive system. We have good data that show that wildlife and humans are being affected. Should we be upset? Yes, I think we should be fundamentally upset. I think we should be screaming in the streets."
